i have a thing for decor that is delicate, playful, and sophisticated. so what a delight it was to come across the 18th century villa of marie christophe, a sculpture who works closely with hermès and dior. maria's home is located in a post card setting west of toulouse in southern france, and it does not get much better than her backdrop to decor - wooden beams, discolored shutters, and terra-cotta floors - but then to top, the villa is located on 14 hectares of wild garden - cedar and cherry trees, rose bushes, linden and honeysuckle, wisteria, and lilac.

cerulean blue skies duvet cover
if you've ever been so lucky to see the impossibly blue waters of the aegean, waters that are so blue they look as though someone must have poured aniline dye into the sea, you'll never have forgotten the spectacle. and your soul might miss the sight of those waters so much that you find yourself trying to recreate the memory in your home decor. well, no one could blame you if from that day on you shunned all future color trend forecasts and just began decorating in shades of cerulean.

a beach bungalow in cape town, south africa
i'm dreaming of the beach but can't get away at the moment. in need of a holiday by the sea and so will probably be posting a lot more of these 'bungalow by the sea' sort of interiors' in various sea shades. what grabs me about this set is the crisp fresh modern feeling, a clean beachy minimalism that is perfect for rest and relaxation. if you are looking for this sort of look on airbnb, i think in most cases it is super hard to find. beach bungalows like these exist mostly in some alternate dimension reserved for pinterest. sure you might find a few places decorated in black and white, but something is always missing. that precious something that makes a place all of modern and restful and charming. sometimes less goes a long way when it comes to decor. but nothing can take the place of inspiration.

the colors of earth and sunlight, are there any more beautiful than these? when decorating, it is good idea to choose what you love, not what is trendy at the moment, because what you love is always in style. shades of yellow and orange can be difficult to work with - unless you just absolutely love them, in which case it's piece of cake, because it will all just flow together seamlessly. but if you manage to pull it off in at least one room, what a pretty little corner you'll have created, your own little slice of sunshine. a place that will greet you warmly in all seasons.

in west London, iconic french design makes a pastel pink statement alongside artful cacti, vintage lighting and school benches, and the work of artisans and makers. No 197 Chiswick Fire Station is built up on a forgotten former home of the local fire brigade. the space is a fascinating example of the new modern eclectic mix, which is shaping up as the defining style of the decade.

almost nothing else can enliven and energize a space like fresh flowers. a room can go from simply nice to outstanding with the placement of just one or three spring beauties. flowers are a celebration of nature and the return of warmer weather. place them somewhere they will be immediately visible when you enter the room. but don't stop there. we are seeing a return of floral patterns in pillows, bed covers, upholstery, and fashion. or did this trend ever really go away? after all, why would it... as if flowers could ever go out of style.

bubble chandelier over a farmhouse dining table
though spare, there is something about each of these rooms that seems to giggle with glee. I can't remember where i came across the term, "merry minimalist," but i knew it when i read it, this is the style for me. it is more than just adding pops of color, because there are rooms out there that do pop with color and at the same time seem to be shouting the word, "happy." but i don't think happiness is something that needs to be shouted from the rooftops to be really and truly happiness. if we think of happiness more as a feeling of gratefulness and satisfaction with what you've got and an appreciation of the simple things in life, then the whole thing becomes more subtle. more of a quiet and private feeling. a feeling of being at peace with the world as it is, and not taking life too seriously. i think these rooms embody that feeling, something i would like to achieve in my own life and also what i hope to achieve when decorating a room.

is there anything more peaceful and inviting than white sheets on a hotel bed? yes, and it is white sheets and room decorated in softly contrasting earth tones peppered with touches of black, just to add a bit of spice. there are so many ways to decorate with an organic color palette, there is no one style that is called for. anything from bohemian to mid century to moroccan works and is even elevated by adding the recollection of nature back in. i like the work of Hugo Guinness and i think his prints are a wonderful focal point around which to build a design. even if you can't get a hold of one of his prints, you can still work with his simple, beautiful style in mind to get that monochromatic botanical look, a look that can be rustic and so glamorous at the same time.
